Bicycles on UK and Dutch Rail Services

Bicycles can be taken on Greater Anglia trains to Harwich. Please keep in mind that reservations are required for the mainline London - Manningtree Intercity services. Local services to Harwich (from Manningtree or Colchester) normally operate on a first-come, first-served basis with limited bike space. We recommend checking the latest information on the Greater Anglia website or reserving in advance if you are travelling on a mainline service, particularly during peak times.

When travelling in the Netherlands with a bicycle, you may take it on the metro from Hook of Holland towards Amsterdam (Rotterdam area), but only during off-peak hours (weekdays 09:00–16:00 and after 18:30; all day at weekends and on public holidays). A separate bicycle ticket is required, usually available at stations. This journey typically involves taking an NS train to Rotterdam or Schiedam, followed by the RET metro, each with its own cycling rules. For full and up-to-date details, please visit the NS website.

Please Note When Purchasing Rail & Sail Tickets

NS (Dutch Railway company) are not pre-selling any tickets via Stena Line which means customers cannot book the Rail & Sail product with inclusive onward travel via Metro and NS. Customers are advised to buy their tickets for onward travel in the Netherlands directly from NS or at the station just outside our Hook of Holland terminal.
